The West African empires of Ghana, Mali and Songhay once encompassed the
tribes of Gambia. It was Britain's first African possession in 1588.
Gambia became independent in 1965. Gambia is one of the only functioning
democracies in Africa. It became a republic in 1970. The country had
several severe famines in 1977-78.
Senegal and Gambia have an agreement (treaty) to form a union of the 2
countries under the name of Senegambia; but, each country will keep its right
to rule its own nation. @
